Hilux on Ebay Is a Textbook-example Survivor
All-original Hilux is crazy-clean from end to end with only 63,000 original miles, and its final eBay bid will blow your mind.
We’re struggling to find the words for this one. Finding a good and clean vintage Hilux is getting immensely difficult. Additionally, the definition of clean varies from person to person. However, there is no arguing that this one will meet everyone’s standards for cleanliness. It’s truly remarkable.
This truck was brought to our attention by a thread on the Toyota Pickup Subreddit. This truck’s eBay listing recently ended, but the final bid cast is for $38,000. While that is a monumental amount of money, we can’t in good conscience say that it’s not worth it.
The description states that the truck initially sold at Shelby Imports Toyota/Mazda Urbana ILL on September 29th, 1981, for $8171.00. The original owner moved cross country twice and kept the truck for 21 years, before selling it to a Toyota collector in 2002. Even considering inflation, the sale price makes for a significant profit!
Though there was some speculation of the trim level, one Reddit user by the name of “Temetnosce” shed some light on the subject. Using the VIN, he determines it is a Deluxe example.
“In the old days, you could order the deluxe pickup and add your own options. Probably a dealer selected these options, such as a sunroof, very rare for yota,” said Temetnosce.
The mind-blowing tidiness continues into the interior. Every surface looks like its never seen human contact. Everything from the steering wheel, gear shifter, stereo interface, and even the seats look like they rolled out of the factory yesterday.
Even the all-original 22R engine bay is borderline unfairly clean. It is incredible to see something of this age that has actually been driven and loved still looks like it belongs in a museum. It appears to be completely free from even a speck of dust.
Perhaps the most remarkable point of cleanliness is the undercarriage of the truck. While there is some surface rust, that’s nothing unusual with nearly forty years on the road. Otherwise, the bottom of the car seems to have nothing worth nitpicking.
Though the chance to buy this gorgeous piece of history has come and gone, we are glad to have had the opportunity to see it. We sincerely hope the new owner continues to keep it in this condition. Another original Hilux this clean will not likely be available for purchase any time soon.
