Grab This Ultra-Rare Toyota Stout Before it’s Gone

Toyota Stout for sale

This 1966 Toyota Stout is an awesome starting point for a project — let’s hope a member buys it!

Early last month, we posted about an LS-swapped 1969 Stout, which led to us going down a bit of a rabbit hole and learning about this exceptionally rare Toyota truck. That model had been given the rat rod treatment, and happened to be located in Australia. But our friends over at Jalopnik just stumbled across a Stout that’s right here on our shores, and while it’s hardly factory fresh, it appears unmodified. Most importantly? It’s for sale!

There’s not a ton of information on the Facebook Marketplace listing, but what’s there seems pretty promising. Since it’s so brief, we’re just going to go ahead and drop the entire listing here:

Up for sale is a 66 Stout. Clean Oregon title. 4-speed manual On the tree. Runs strong, drives, stops but will need a little work to be road ready. It sat in a barn for 25 years, solid truck over all. Floor boards and inside bed have a little bit of visible rust, but nothing major. Very cool patina. There aren’t a lot of these left!

At $3000, the price isn’t exactly pocket change, but as far as starting points for a project goes, you could do far, far worse. The thing we find most encouraging — for obvious reasons — is the relatively limited rust. Because early Toyota product isn’t exactly known for being resistant to the old tin worm. And in our experience, fixing bodywork is a fool-proof method for causing the cost of a project to skyrocket.

Given that we’re already full up on projects, we can’t justify purchasing this truck, even if it is tantalizingly close to our Seattle home base. And since we can’t actually plunk down the cash, we’re hoping to live vicariously through a member of the forum. Obviously, there’s only so much you can tell from the pictures, but if the description is accurate, this truck seems like it has great bones. Plus, the fact that it already runs and drives is a big bonus. How amazing would it be to follow its build thread here?

If this was our truck, we wouldn’t do much to the exterior. We love the red steel wheels, and think the patina on the hood looks fantastic. So we’d likely nip any rust in the bud, then throw on a coast of clear, so it would be frozen in time. As far as drivetrain goes? That’s a more complicated question. There’s a big argument to be made that a survivor like this should be kept original, and while we understand the sentiment, the idea of a modern drivetrain under the skin is pretty attractive.

Unlike our friend Down Under, we’d want to keep the oily bits in the Toyota family, and would likely look for the Tacoma with a bashed up body to provide the transplant. But what would you do? Would you choose the way of pain, and try to keep this baby original? Go rat rod? Or drop in an LS and make it a crazy sleeper. Shoot us a message and let us know!
