First Full Image(s) of the 2022 Toyota Tundra Released
Leaked photos of the 2022 Toyota Tundra demonstrate the danger of the company’s glacially paced reveal.
There’s a great saying about how three people can keep a secret — if two of them are dead. That said, if instead of two other people, you decided to share said secret with, say, an enormous dealership network? Keeping things quiet is going to be pretty tough. And unfortunately for Toyota, that fact was put into stark relief last week, when a few blurry image of the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro showed up on Tundra.com, an enthusiast forum dedicated to the company’s full-size pickup.
Clearly stamped with an Indiana dealership’s email, you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to determine their origin. Oops.
Now, the official reveal of the Tundra isn’t set to occur until September. But just as it did with the Supra, Toyota has been releasing information in tiny drips and drabs. So officially, we’d only seen a dark exterior shot and a teaser pic of the new V6 motor that’ll be under the hood. The white truck seen in the lead photo of this post was hastily released by Toyota in the wake of the leaked images appearing online, so now we can add another company-sanctioned photo to the stack.
Here’s what we can tell from the pics so far. All the lighting on the front fascia will be in the form of LEDs, and along with some slender looking units around bumper level, there’s a light bar in the center of the grille. Additionally, there are some trick-looking amber lights around the hood line. At any rate, they should make it easy to spot a Tundra at night.
Looking past the lighting, the front end seems to follow the traditional “square is good” school of pickup truck design, and I think that’s great. The hood also has pronounced bulges at the edges nearest the fenders, and a dip in the center. It’s pretty clear that Toyota’s design folks wanted to ensure there’s nothing remotely soft about the lines of its new baby.
Of course, the images we’re not supposed to see show even more detail. First, there’s tailgate with a massive TRD Pro logo stamped into it, and second, there are the totally trick looking rear taillights, with twin vertical stripes in each unit. As with the front, there’s also a series of three amber LEDs present, which are integrated above the handle. The fact that the tailgate is two-tone makes me wonder what kind of tricks we can expect from it, given how multi-function tailgates are currently all the rage.
For the record, there’s also another new teaser from Toyota, which isn’t getting tiresome at all. This one is of the interior, and shows a race-inspired stripe on the top of the steering wheel, a huge infotainment screen, and A-pillar integrated speakers.
Hauling and towing wise, it’s unclear how close the new Tundra will be to the segment-dominating Ford F-150, thought I’d expect any rig will be in spitting distance of any of the Blue Oval’s stats. Given how long Toyota has kept the current generation in production, it would make sense that long-awaited successor will be a game-changing entrant, meant to challenge the Big Three on their home turf.
