Expedition Overland Builds an Incredibly Cool, Capable 2023 Toyota Sequoia
The brand new, third-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a cool rig as-is, but this modified example previews an even better future.
The Toyota Sequoia received a much-needed overhaul for the 2023 model year, one that involved about as extensive a redesign as one can get – complete with all-new bodywork, a completely revised interior, and a new powertrain – Toyota’s twin-turbocharged, 3.4-liter i-Force hybrid cranking out 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. It’s an enticing entry in the large SUV space, and one that should appeal to a pretty diverse demographic – not just soccer moms. In fact, the TRD Pro version of the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a pretty compelling off-roader, but instead of going that route, the folks at Expedition Overland recently treated the more luxurious Limited to a total overhaul, and the results speak for themselves.
Nicknamed “Simba,” this custom 2023 Toyota Sequoia has been built to the hilt, transformed from a cushy daily to a capable off-roader and overlanding rig. That process began on the outside, where the big SUV was treated to a full hoop CBI front bumper, a CBI rear bumper with dual swing outs, CBI side steps, and skid plates. There’s plenty of lighting to illuminate the trails, with a 20-inch Rigid bumper light bar, 50-inch roof bar, along with front bumper units, rock lights, and area lights, too, while a WARN Zeon 12S helps out with recovery.
Underneath, Expedition Overland gave the Sequoia a big boost courtesy of an Icon 3.0 CDEV suspension setup with extended travel coilovers up front and Old Man Emu rear springs, along with Icon’s billet upper control arm kit. The SUV rolls on a set of 18-inch Icon wheels wrapped with 35×12.5-inch General Grabber X3 tires, and there’s an ARB tire repair kit and tire deflator/inflator on board for mobile repairs and adjustments on the fly.
To make this a vessel capable of living in for days at a time, the team at Overland Expedition added a three-person Alu-Cab hard shell roof tent system and a Goose Gear rear seat delete sleeping platform, a set of drawers for the cargo area to store things, a 200-watt solar panel, a Redarc power management system, a roof rack, and an ARB air compressor.
The result of all that work is one incredibly cool, incredibly capable rig, a machine that can carry seven passengers on an expedition and provide sleeping space for at least three of them. It’s a nice preview of what we expect to be a robust aftermarket for the new. third-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia, one that only figures to expand moving forward.
