Do You Have Any of These ‘Annoying’ Tacoma Mods?
Obviously, your Tacoma mods are between you and your truck. But you know what they say about opinions…
When it comes to people modding their vehicles, I tend to stick to a “you do you” philosophy. Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t have strong opinions about what “right” and “wrong.” And I’ve definitely whispered, “I’m sorry, you didn’t deserve this” to numerous cars sporting those hideous stick-on vents the AutoZone contingent seems so terribly infatuated with. Just thinking of them makes me shudder.
That said, I found this video from Tacomaholic to be a fun watch, if only to learn — for science! — what particularly pisses off people in the Tacoma crowd.
The first one the host mentioned is “Raptor lights,” the tiny strip of orange lights that were popularized by Ford’s ferocious desert rig. Personally, this doesn’t bother me, and I wonder how many folks know these aren’t specific to the Raptor, but a legal requirement for vehicles over a certain width. And since that Blue Oval is approximately 30 feet wide, it needs them.
Another one that really gets people upset is when folks put a TRD-spec grille on a non-TRD car. This one, I actually understand a little bit better, as I’ve never been a fan of seeing an M badge on a standard 3 Series, or an AMG badge on E-Class. In those cases I’ve always wondered exactly who those folks are trying to impress? Because any enthusiast worth their salt is going to know they’re looking at an imposter. Overall though, I agree with the host in that the TRD grille looks way cooler than the stock unit.
The biggest complaints, however, seen to be directed at MESO, the low-cost purveyor of bits for the third-gen Tacoma. And I guess I could see how some of this stuff would make your truck look tacky, especially if you say, ordered every bit the company offers. A few odds and ends, though? That seems OK. Of course, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what I think — but I’d love to know your opinion! What mods annoy you the most? Hit me up and let me know!
