Dealer Rep: New Tundra ‘Most Exciting’ Thing in Five Years

2021 Toyota Tundra

Toyota dealers don’t have all the info about the 2022 Tundra yet, but what they do know has them excited.

For the last few years, the most exciting things to happen at Toyota dealers have revolved around sports cars. Most recently, it’s been the Supra, and before that, it was all about the 86. But as much as many enthusiasts love sports cars, the segment is only a sliver of the overall market — and it seems to be getting smaller by the day. One market that continues to grow, of course, is the full-size truck market.

Unfortunately, Toyota hasn’t significantly updated the Tundra since 2007, which is an epically long time in the red-hot segment. So the fight for buyers has primarily been fought between the heavy hitters at Ford, GM, and Ram. The good news, however, is that Toyota has been busy working on the all-new 2022 version of its full-size offering, and even though dealers don’t have all the info yet, they’re getting excited. According to our friends at Automotive News, they’re set to get more details this week.

On that note, here’s what Toyota National Dealer Advisory Council Chairman Robby Findlay’s had to say about the potential for the 2022 Tundra:

The new Tundra is the most exciting thing we’ve had in the last five-plus years. I mean, we’ve been waiting so long for a new Tundra; we know the potential of that full-size-truck market. And from everything that they’re telling us, we’re going to have best in class. I mean, we’re going to have a world beater, and it’s going to be fun to really go toe-to-toe with the domestic trucks.

Given how competitive the segment is, Toyota is going to need a world-beater to make a significant dent, especially given how entrenched buyers are when it comes to brand preference. Seriously, in some families, you might not even get a seat at Thanksgiving table if you opt for the wrong competitor, and Ford and Chevy fans go at each other like they’re all decedents of the Hatfields and the McCoys.

At this point, the only thing we really know about the 2022 Tundra is that it’ll have some trick LED lighting, an eight-speed automatic, a likely drop the naturally aspirated V8 for a turbocharged V6. But that’s certain to change this week, as loose-lipped dealers are sure to leak some classified developments out to the press. So stay tuned, and watch the video below for a summary everything we know so far.

That said, what would you like to see on the new Tundra? Do you think Toyota should make a hardcore TRD version available, to try to snag some buyers from the Ford’s Raptor, Ram’s TRX, or Chevy’s ZR2? Hit me up and let me know, and if you happen to see any development mules on the road, make sure to post them to the forum!
