A new teaser pic suggests the next-generation Toyota Tundra might have a V6 under the hood.

You know what would be really cool? If Toyota dragged out the reveal of the new Tundra like it did with the Supra. Obviously, I’m kidding. Because even if I wasn’t, there’s literally not even enough time to on the clock to pull a stunt like that. Well, unless the marketing division wants fans to get their first look at the 2022 truck in the second quarter of 2027 model year, that is. But while it’s coming in tiny drips, information about the company’s next generation full-size pickup is surfacing. And now we have a teaser pic of what’s going to be under the hood.

The mill in question bears iForce Max branding, which is an evolution of the iForce badge Toyota used for first-generation V8-powered examples of the Tundra. That said, we don’t have any specs on the new engine just yet, and it’s not even clear if it will have eight-cylinders. Because while the American truck market — meaning the most important pickup market in the world — is biased toward V8 engines, Toyota went with a turbo V6 for the latest Land Crusier, and there’s some speculation the iForce Max might be a six as well.

That speculation comes from our friends over at The Drive, who pointed out that there are three visible ribs in the plastic cover in the teaser shot, and noted that ribs like those are generally used to denoted cylinder banks. The logic here is that since we’re only seeing about half the engine, and 3 x 2 ≠ 8, we’re looking at a six-pot. And for what it’s worth? That makes sense to me, even if I have a tough time imagining Toyota would only offer a V6 — especially given how excited dealers are. Emissions or not, a V8 still sounds better in a sales pitch.

Personally, I’m holding out hope that Toyota goes big here, and offers a twin-turbo V8 in a Raptor-fighting halo model. The engineers are Lexus have been working on just such an engine for years, and I don’t think it would be outside the realm of possibility for a version of it to trickle down to Toyota. There’s just so much money in the high-performance off-road segment right now, it seems almost fiscally irresponsible for the company to leave that much money on the table.

But what do you think we’re looking at here? Hit me up and let me know, and stay tuned for info on the 2022 Toyota Tundra!
