22R-E Engine Removal: The Sketchy Way

22R-E Engine Removal: The Sketchy Way

By -

Removing a 22R-E engine is like riding a bike for most ‘Yota gearheads as we all know the process well. However, here’s another way…

Typically, 22R-E engine removal is a pretty straightforward albeit cumbersome task. But Brian from 6th Gear Garage, decided to switch up his usual process for kicks and giggles in his latest video.

There will be no hoisting of the engine alone, dropping of the trans, or removal of the subframes. No. This time around Brian will be removing the cab with his cherry picker. You read that right. The cab.

1987 Toyota Pickup 4x4

Brian recently acquired this 1987 Toyota Pickup 4×4 and began parting it out. The last things he needs off of it are the engine, trans, and transfer case. The engine is the famed and trusty 22R-E with an Engine Builder head. Brian shares that it will be going into his ’85 Pickup… eventually.

“I’ve pulled engines out of these trucks in so many ways,” says Brian “So today, I’m going to try a new way.”

First off, Brian informs us that the cab of this rustbucket is unbolted and ready for removal. With the exhaust broken off, engine mounts, steering column, and all lines removed, this experiment is ready to go.

Lifting the cab

Next, Brian takes his engine hoist and uses it to lift the front end of the cab. A neighbor joins in on the fun and helps Brian to set the cab upright on the rear of the truck frame. Brian supports the cab with a 2×4 and ratchet straps to ensure no disasters occur.

“Look at that!” exclaims Brian “Easy access granted. I can yank this whole thing right out now.”

Pulling the engine

After a “Don’t try this at home,” warning, Brian preps for the removal. Using a load leveler, Brian works the hoist to pull the engine, trans, and transfer case all at once. Brian tops off the spectacle by not so gracefully shoving the cab over to let it fall back into place. After a quick degreasing and pressure washer bath, this unit is ready for install.

Mike‘s coming to get the rolling chassis and we’re gonna get weird on a build. And he’s bringing out my next rusty ‘Yota, another ’87 4×4,” shares Brian “I mean, who am I if I don’t have a rusty ‘Yota in my driveway.”

Pushing over the cab

This 22R-E engine removal was impressive, to say the least. Perhaps this will become the preferred method of engine extraction. Not for the ease, but the fun of course.
