Donated by Rosita Soliman Foundation, Land Cruiser 70s will be used as ambulances to tackle any obstacle they come across.

When most think of the Toyota Land Cruiser, at least in the United States, it’s usually either the current luxury off-roader, which is still more than capable of dominating the trail, or the classic, no-frills machines of yesteryear, especially those of the FJ era of 1960 through 1984.

Outside of North America, the classic styling exists today, in the form the Land Cruiser 70. The no-frills machines are a perfect match for the toughest environments around, from the Australian outback, to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. And speaking of Southeast Asia, Philippine-based AutoIndustriya.com reports a pair of the 70s have landed in the country’s capital (and most densely populated city in the world), Manila, to perform their civic duties to the city.

Ordered in the Troop Carrier configuration, then converted into ambulances, the Land Cruisers were donated to Manila by local rescue organization Rosita Soliman Foundation. The rear section loses the seats to make room for a stretcher and all of the tools and supplies required for paramedics to stabilize those in the greatest need.

Under the hoods of each Land Cruiser is a 1HZ 4.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-six diesel with water-cooling, capable of delivering up to 133 horses and 210 lb-ft of torque to the tough streets of Manila. And speaking of water-cooling, the engine won’t need to worry about drowning, thanks to the snorkel mounted on the passenger side, a much-needed option for when tropical cyclone season roars across the South Pacific every November through April.

“Manila has been tagged as one of the cities ‘left behind’ in Metro Manila,” Rosita Soliman Foundation director Jojo Soliman told Top Gear Philippines. “Our 30-year-old Rosita Soliman Foundation decided to donate two brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser units to Manila’s Disaster Risk and Management Office knowing that it will be put to very good use, and for them to be able to respond properly and quickly to the citizens of Manila.”

It certainly makes us happy to know these Land Cruisers will be out there to aid the citizens of Manila, should they need it.
