Toyota Issues TSB to Replace Faulty 2024 Tacoma Transmissions

There are some faulty eight-speed automatic 2024 Tacoma transmissions out there that may need to be replaced entirely.

Toyota – long known for building some of the most reliable vehicles on the planet – has faced its fair share of unusual issues as of late, many of which coincide with its recently-redesigned products. This list of woes includes the fairly-new Lexus LX600 and Toyota Grand Highlander, which were first recalled over engine contamination in the also-new twin-turbo 3.5-liter and later tabbed for replacements, as well as the Lexus TX and Grand Highlander, which were also recently recalled over a faulty airbag issue. Now, after receiving a handful of complaints from owners, Toyota has also issued a technical service bulletin aimed at replacing faulty 2024 Tacoma transmissions, too.

A number of 2024 Toyota Tacoma owners have been voicing concerns over issues suffered with that brand new pickup’s eight-speed automatic transmission, which in many cases have been displaying various problem codes. Toyota is now acknowledging this problem, but not with a recall, as some would expect – rather, it has issued a TSB, according to users in the Tacoma4G forums.

However, there is one big catch here – this TSB only covers problematic eight-speed automatic 2024 Tacoma transmissions, and only those that have displayed one of six diagnostic codes, which indicate that either the torque converter clutch actuator is stuck in the “off” position, or that the gearbox has a stuck pressure control solenoid actuator. These are the six codes covered by the TSB:

  • P07407F
  • P079571
  • P08BA71
  • P271371
  • P280771
  • P281671

If your 2024 Tacoma displays one of these six codes, Toyota will replace your eight-speed transmission for free, as well as the torque converter assembly. Pickups equipped with the six-speed manual transmission aren’t included in this TSB, though it’s also unclear just how many vehicles are impacted by this particular problem, nor is it clear how long it will take dealers to procure the parts needed to rectify it.

The other issue is the fact that this TSB fix only applies to trucks with transmissions that are already having problems, so those that own a 2024 Tacoma with the eight-speed will likely be driving around wondering if their gearbox is going to begin displaying issues at any given time, which is less than ideal. Had Toyota issued a recall for this problem, we’d know production dates and impacted models, specifically -as well as the scope of the issue – but for now at least, owners can head over here to see if their VIN is affected.
