Doug DeMuro Reviews the 2022 Toyota 4Runner
While he might describe it as “ancient,” DeMuro also notes that the 4Runner is incredibly capable.
Toward the beginning of his latest video, Doug DeMuro remarks that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner he’s reviewing is essentially the same as the last 4Runner he reviewed — four years ago. And that’s as funny as it is true, as there’s no question that the 4Runner is getting up there. Plus, over the part few years, we’ve only seen the addition of some trim levels and tweaks to the infotainment system.
The current generation dates all the way back until 2009, and while Toyota hasn’t provided a specific timeline, the smart money says we won’t see a next-generation until the 2024 model year. So it’s entirely accurate when DeMuro calls it “ancient.” That said, the current level of demand, not to mention the crazy prices people are willing to pay for these rigs, indicates that Toyota’s steady as she goes tactic is paying dividends.
As DeMuro notes, the reason he wanted to review a vehicle that hasn’t changed all that much is to discover why this close to the end of the run, it’s still setting sales records. Because the 4Runner just had its best year ever, and the fact that people are willing to wait over six months for one means next year isn’t looking too bad either. Indeed, the only real problem Toyota has with the 4Runner is that it can’t make them fast enough. Well, that and the insane markups dealers are charging…
Of course, those markups aren’t Toyota’s fault, as no automaker likes to see its dealers gouging customers. But the real-world pricing is impossible to ignore when you’re looking at the content level of the 4Runner. For example, even on the TRD Pro level, there aren’t now-common features like parking sensors or a wireless charging pad. While DeMuro spends plenty of time dumbstruck by how many modern touches the 4Runner lacks, he eventually acknowledges that people love it because it’s ancient, not despite it. Overall, it’s terribly good fun to watch — so enjoy!
