Marty McFly’s Dream SR5 Xtra Cab Replica Meets Auction Block

For most Back to the Future fans, the star of the trilogy wasn’t Michael J. Fox or Christopher Lloyd, but the DMC DeLorean. And why not? As Lloyd’s Dr. Emmett Brown said, “If you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?”
For Toyota fans of the first film, though, the real star was the black 1985 SR5 Xtra Cab coveted by Fox’s Marty McFly. Now, a replica of the stunning pickup is set to travel across the red carpet of Mecum Chattanooga October 15.
McFly’s desire to own this SR5 Xtra Cab is understandable. Toyota fans know this truck is a unicorn among its generation. The 1985 model year was the final year for the solid front axle, and the first year for electronic fuel injection. The 4×4 model would lose the solid front axle for an independent front suspension/torsion bar setup for 1986 and beyond.
Linked to the EFI version of the 22-R inline-four, a five-speed manual guides the 105 horses to the back. The transfer case contributes by shuffling the power to the front and rear as needed. And like the movie star, this SR5 has the gray interior, cloth buckets and all. Even if this specific configuration weren’t already etched into the imagination, seeing this rig on the road would attract all of the attention.
Since the black SR5 Xtra Cab is a part of the BTTF canon, though, a few appropriate goodies come with this replica. Three are tied to Back to the Future II: the Mattel Hoverboard, the Nike self-lacing sneakers, and a copy of Grays Sports Almanac. There’s also a signed collage of the truck featuring Lloyd’s and Fox’s autographs, and an RC replica of the replica.
An Eighties SR5 is already the bee’s knees. The 1985 SR5 Xtra Cab 4×4 in black with all the fixings, though? A timeless classic, right up there with the DeLorean itself. However, this truck doesn’t need 1.21 Gigawatts or hit 88 mph to bring anyone back to the future. It already does.
