First Specs on the 2022 Toyota Tundra Released
It’s been 14 years since the last redesign. Here are all the latest specs on the 2022 Toyota Tundra.
After what seems like an eternity, we finally have the specs on the 2022 Toyota Tundra. So let’s get right to the point. First off, there will be two powertrains available at launch. As expected, Toyota has ditched the V8 for a iForce Max twin-turbo V6. Base models will have just the internal combustion unit, which is good for 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping score at home, that’s up from the output of the current range-topping V8, which pumps out 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of twist.
Going forward, the top-spec Tundra will be a hybrid, and pack 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a nickel metal hydride battery system. Both setups will be mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. When properly equipped, the new Tundra will be able to tow up to 12,000 pounds, and carry a payload of 1,940 pounds. Previously, we learned that the last-gen model’s leaf-spring suspension has been replaced with a multi-link coil spring setup. An adjustable air suspension setup will also be available.
Double Cab and CrewMax models will be on the menu, and the CrewMax models will get a choice of either a 6.5-foot bed, or a shorter 5.5-foot cargo area. As with the current Tundra, four different trims will be available including SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro. In the cabin, buyers will be able to choose between the standard eight-inch touchscreen or the optional 14-inch display. There will also be voice-recognition tech, which will be accessed by saying, “hey Toyota.” Having used similar systems from other automakers, I’m looking forward to checking it out in the latest Tundra.
Color choices will include carryover choices like Smoked Mesquite and Midnight Black Metallic, along with Supersonic red, Blueprint, Lunar Rock, and the TRD-exclusive Solar Octane. Up to now, Lunar Rock was only available on the TRD Pro models, and it will be interesting to see what the take rate is on what’s — at least in my opinion — one of the coolest standard colors available from any automaker.
This news, of course, comes on top of all the other info we’ve learned about the 2022 Toyota Tundra. For those just tuning in, that includes the fact that there will be a massive moonroof and power rear window, the interior is going to be super plush, and Multi-Terrain Select will be available on the Tundra for the first time. Even more exciting is the fact that TRD Pro models will get Fox shocks and a coil suspension at the rear. Given the legendary status of Fox in the off-road world, that means drivers can expect to see big handling improvements.
At this time, there are still plenty of things we don’t know. The two biggest ones are pricing and fuel economy, and I expect those will be released shortly before sales begin later this year. Previously, Toyota has stated that production will begin in November, and that dealers can expect to start receiving inventory in December. While the chip shortage has finally caught up with Toyota, the long-awaited Tundra is a marque model for the brand, and it’s making productions cuts elsewhere, to ensure that the San Antonio plant starts cranking out trucks on schedule.
