2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition

If you’re not ready to spring for the TRD, this option will make new your Tacoma better suited for the trail.

We know the new Tundra is coming soon, but even given how red-hot the pickup market is right now, the redesigned Tacoma is still a little ways off. Industry watchers expect the next-gen model to arrive sometime around 2024, which given that we’ve just said a not-so-fond farewell to a year that basically lasted a decade, feels like an eternity. Of course, it’s worth noting that while the Tacoma is more than a little long in the tooth, that hasn’t hurt sales.

As I reported a couple of weeks back, Toyota is still killing it in regard to moving units, and at this point, it’s bested longtime leader Volkswagen, and become the largest automaker in the world.

Before the all-new version of Toyota’s legendary mid-size truck hits showrooms, however, the company is adding some new dealer-installed options to the order books. The latest addition is a new lift kit package, which will allow buyers to get some of the off-road performance afforded TRD Pro models without having to pony up for everything the range-topping rig includes.

For your local Toyota dealer to install the package, you’ll have to opt for a V6 model with four-wheel drive, and a standard bed configuration. But thanks to the TRD-tuned Bilstein monotube shocks, the result is 1.7 inches of additional ground clearance, a three-degree improvement in approach angle, a half-degree improvement in departure angle, and breakover angle improvement of an inch-and-a-half.

Importantly, there’s an updated grille, which has a new sensor and camera bracket, and ensures that all the driver-assist functionality remains intact. At $1, 350, it sounds like a pretty good deal, though it’s not clear how many labor hours installation entails. If you’re shopping for a new Tacoma and got pitched this option, let me know what the quote is. The package can be added to any truck from 2020 up, and there have to be some interested parties here on the forum.
