MR2 Bucket Seat Swap Into A 89-95 Toyota Pickup

MR2 Bucket Seat Swap Into A 89-95 Toyota Pickup, written by member standardbyker88 05-05 2007

MR2 Bucket Seat Swap This how-to will show you how to take a set of 85-89 Toyota MR2 bucket seats, and install them in your 89-95 Toyota pickup. Should also apply to 84-88 pickups and many year 4runners. Possibly other Toyota trucks as well. That I can't verify, since I haven?t done it.

Tools needed:

Metric socket set, I believe a 10, 12, and 14. Pretty basic.

Drill

Drill bit; about 3/8"

New hardware: I used 3/8" hardware.

I used about 1-1/2" long ones in the back, and about a 1" long up front.

I also used some really wide fender washers on the bottom side of the floorboards.

The seats, obviously.

You can see here I have a really good shape set of seats I got from craigslist for 60 bucks. They are a special package set from 85-86. Driver has adjustable angle, boltster and lumbar. Sweet part, its all mechanical so there is no heavy actuators or wiring.

This is what I started with. Bone stock base model interior. Bench was comfortable, but not very sporty.

Here is the rear bolt. Easy way to get it out is slide the seat forward, and flip the back forward. One on each side.

Here are the front bolts. They go into a rail that's attached to the floor. It grabs over and down the front. Sliding the seat back makes these ones easier. One on each side.

This is what it looked like without the bench seat. You can see the rubber mat ends about half way back. I removed the center seat belt, and kept it in case one of my buckets breaks and I need parts.

You will need to put the seats into the truck, one at a time, and align them with the front outer bolt holes that are stock. In my case, I had to use all new holes on the driver side due to a bent rail. But they should line up about right with the wheel if its not bent.

Mark and drill the other front hole, and bolt it in. Then you can mark the rear holes, remove the seat and drill them. Put it back in, bolt it in and see how you like it.

They will cause you to sit a bit lower than the bench did. But I liked that part. If its too low, try putting raisers in the back. Basically a few 1" bolts between the floor and the seat.

You probably won't need to do this, but I did. I stacked 3 ?? nuts between the floor and the bottom of the driver side rear outer bracket. I did it because I was running out of time in the borrowed shop and it was bent. I plan to fix this later. Maybe?

You will most likely need to unbolt the inner halfs of the seat belts, and rotate the bracket around. Otherwise it causes a clearance issue with the rear inner brackets. I plan to flip it, and bend the angle to about the same, but the opposite direction. This is because it makes my belts upside down, and therefore I have to twist them.

Here you can see the upside down belts.

This is how the final result should look. I also added a 90-95 4runner console later, and sectioned my shifter stick to have a shorter throw and better appearance.

Notes: This should be pretty straight forward, and it went really easy except for the problems due to the bent driver seat rail. It only took about 2 hours or so to complete, including cleaning out the interior. I'd say difficulty, its about a 2/5. Pretty much anybody can handle it. Hardest part is finding somebody to hold a wrench on the top at the rear inner bolts while you tighten them on the underside. Since you can't reach to hold both at once.
