primer is still wet in the last pic, and I havent ground down the weld at the bottom of the bed yet since I've gotta go to work too ! Wouldn't it be nice if they'd keep paying me if I didn't go ? I left the top of the bed roughed in since I'm going to be welding the cap onto the sides to complete the "bed" soon.

Ohh yea, the bob ended up being about 7.5 inches. I wanted to take enough out to make a difference, but not so much that I didn't have ANY usable bed left.

Dude your 4Runner is so awesome. I remember when my brother and I were talking to you about it at SE4RJ4 and you showed us the engine and stuff. The body was perfect! It is still pretty awesome the way you have it now. Great job. *subscribing*

i have been looking at doing this conversion and I don't think retention of the rear power window is possible b/c of the rear wheel wells interfering with the path of the glass. i'm sure you could get a partial power window though.

Jeremy, a few questions...

are you using an arc welder or MIG or TIG?

will your rear seats retain the use of the headrests or will they hit the glass?

will an adult fit in the rear seat without their head hitting the glass?

thanks and keep up the good work!

Michael

I'm using a Hobart 140 MIG since I haven't gotten a 220V outlet done in my garage yet. After I do that I'm thinking of upgrading to a Miller or Lincoln 210. I use gas since flux core is so messy. I don't know how to stick or TIG, but plan on learning TIG next year most likely. I'm taking my first MIG class at a local community college currently. It's not hard when you have someone that knows what they are doing to show you the ropes. I found sheet metal harder than plate, you have to be SO much more careful.

I'm not sure about the headrests yet. I'll see when I start mocking up sheetmetal for behind the seats. I won't be using the power glass for sure since I want to do coilovers which would come up right in the way of such a large assembly. I'll probably end up modifying the sheetmetal immediately around the opening to work with some horizontally sliding lexan sheets and be able to have some sort of locking mechanism as well. I'm hoping to make it water tight too. If you can weld, and are a bit creative, almost anything is possible. It just takes alot of work.

Good point about the wheel wells... hadn't thought about that one.

I saw a 2nd Gen chop many months ago on Pirate where he took the back cab/ window assembly of a similar year pickup. Buttoned up very clean, since the body lines are basically the same.

Was a clean way to go and gave a factory glass slider window to boot.

You should have traded me rigs before you started cutting up that perfectly good body, I have an awesome 1st gen that needs some body work anyways.

I took about two weeks off working on it because whenever it gets to the point where you don't enjoy working on it anymore, you need to take a break. You can only do so much grinding and sanding in a short period of time before you get fed up ! I picked it back up again this week however. It should be back running within a day or two and I'll snap some updated pictures.

pictures for your viewing pleasure. I'm pretty sure the body work is as good as its gonna get. I showed the "good" side that i did when I was still into putting a lot of effort into it. The passenger side isn't quite as smoothed out but I'm so sick of sanding. Right now its obviously just primered, I'm likely going to repaint the whole truck before i try to start any exo-cage work. Still undecided about trying to close in the cab behind the seats. For now its just going to stay open and in the garage and only brought out on nice days anyway. I took out one of the rear seats and mounted a place to put stuff like my eventual dual batts, air compressor, amp for the stereo I'm gonna put back in it ( can't stand not having any tunes ! ). The wood is bolted to the truck in 4 places and everything bolts to that, so no yard sales in the event of a rollover . Last pic shows after i pulled the rest of the dash out. I'm working on finding some aluminum sheet to do it all up in that. I ordered a switch panel from 12-volt guy that will be pretty sweet.

Definitely getting there.

Really like how the bob and chop turned out. What material did you use to cap the bed sides? Are they fairly rigid, or will you have to add bracing?

Any full length pics from the side?
