Finally Finished Long Travel Rear Suspension Gen3 Runner

Finally the racing season has taken a break so I could get the rear suspension finished...... errr (still need a coil that will take the travel and provide lift) I'm left with <=12" of strapped travel.



> Twisted Customs (see Dec Dirtsport MIM) made the upper/lower control arms and panhard bar. They utilized heims with their special spacers on axle end, and poly-bushings on the frame end to free up all the bind. I know there are beefier looking arms out there but these are the same as Twisted competition rigs and light. Chromolly lowers and DOM uppers/panhard.
> Sway-A-Away 2x10 emulsion shocks with high capacity remote reservoirs to keep things cool. Brian Bell, of SAW valved them to perfection.
> Light Racing's 6" Jounce controls the uptravel.
>Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers to keep things from rubbing and allows the rear to track inline with the wider Total Chaos LT front.
> Downey swaybar extender and ARB OME 891 coils
> Trail-Gear frame bracing

Very cool! I think this is the route I'll be taking on my 04.. I just installed an front LT on it also.

is this a kit they plan on selling?
Have u tried land cruiser coils?

Links are forsale at Twisted Customs. Total Chaos is looking into doing the hoop as well. Bug them about it.

I haven't used LC coils simply because I haven't found any that give 3.5 to 4" of lift. Know of any?

91-92 LC coils have 8 wraps and will give you 3.5 to 4 inchs

I thought new FZJ-80 rear coils would give that much lift to our 4runners.

I was wondering about the swaybar also, it looks like it's going to limit the travel in the position it's in right now?

The sway bar is at full droop in that picture and is using drop extenders to allow it the movement. Down side is it does rub a little on the control arms. I have thought about doing a custom sway bar setup, but haven't designed that yet.

Ahh, I was just curious. I figured a lot of people just put quick disconnects on too. The whole thing looks like a pretty sweet setup. Very clean and well done!

Any pics of it flexing? Does the tire rub on the shocks when one side is stuffed and the other side is drooped? Very cool setup!

Good question, but sorry no pics of it flexing. I chased down to Cabo during the 1000 with 2.5's in the rear, but didn't like the spacing (barely could fit a finger between the frame and shock. Therefore, I had SAW develop the 2.0 shock for me to reduce the liklyhood of hitting the frame rails during articulation. This is the reason for the expanded oil reservoirs, to keep the smaller shock cool.

If my measurements are correct it shouldn't be a problem. I'll get some action shots up soon.

So, TC is thinking of making the rear shock hoop? Would that design work with second gen rear wheel wells? Also, did you lengthen the links at all? This setup is very similar to what I've been wanting to do.

BUG TC they are talking serious about it. You know how it works, supply follows demand.

I kept all the toyota geometry the same. The reason I went with treaded links (upper & lower) was so I could maintain stockish pion angle no matter what coil/lift I end up with. So yes, the lengths of the links are essentially the same as stock.

Finally jumped out and took some pics this past week when I was playing out in Colorado. No rub on either the stuffed side or drooped side, however sway-bar was still connected so the tire could stuff more. Droop side is strapped so it isn't going to go any farther.
Also, changed out coils to ARB's 891's, ride is 5x's better.


You can see in this pic that I still have 3" of up travel to go, but with the swaybar still connected this is as far as I could flex it w/o stressing things. You can see that the shock hose is rubbing the tire, it is protected by a thicker hose but still not ideal.:

Droop side still has about an inch before contacting frame rails:
