I've read hundreds of posts and tons of threads on here, but just joined the other day. I didn't realize there was a 3.4 section - can someone point me to it. I was just looking for it and couldn't find it. Still learning my way around the website as well as the 3.4 conversion! As for the tranny - We started with a matching 98 taco tranny but didn't want to have to buy the marlin conversion kit and other tcase. So we went back to a 95 4runner tranny to get the front output on the correct side, but realized the wiring looked like a pain, so now we are working with the 97 T100 tranny and it seems to be the best fit in terms of ease of instalation. I can't afford to make everything great right out of the gate, this is not an economical swap to begin with, so we're trying to keep my investment as low as possible. we've decided to go with the ORS wiring harness to help with the wiring issues, so that is a very large chunk of money right off the bat. I appreciate the thoughts about making it as strong as possible, but i've been without it for quite a while now and it's summer and i really want this back as soon as possible. I'm not into crawling or anthing like that - i just want a solid reliable trail beater for getting to the camping/fishing/hunting spots that others can get to... I'm leaving IFS and all of that the same. The 2 in lift and 31s are plenty for me to get to and from where i'm going - I just need to get this swap completed. one comment was about not being able to use the stock shifters on the auto and we just realized that yesterday so... buh bye to my console! this set up is offering the least amount of electrical or mechanical problems thus far. Has anyone used this set up before? and is it as straight forward as it appears?

You have options. You can use the stock tranny. Wiring is super easy- ultimase just did it. Also if you still want to use the T100 trans case, you can use the new shifter setup, but use a "stock" 4 cylinder auto console (from 90-95) and your existing armrest stuff will fit like stock. Mt.Goat's thread has the best info on this. Post us up some pics of your swap!

Thanks vasinvictor for the link! and for the comments about the console unit! asking about a console unit was on my list of things to do. That ought to be really helpful. I'll take a look at his thread... as for the pics - i'll get a couple up sometime soon. all i have is pics of the empty engine bay at this point! I'll try to put a couple up over the next few days. thanks for the help!

Thanks for that link donomite - we actually found that website just 2 days ago. They are a little less expensive for their harnesses, but they are booked through August, 2012! ORS said they could possibly have my harness done in as few as 2-3 weeks, so i'm willing to pay the extra money to get it quicker since I've been without my runner for several weeks now. I have '91 Runner and am swapping over the 3.4 (taco) into it. I had the 3.0 for the last 2 years and put roughtly 20k on it and am ready for something that can get up and down the mountain passes in Colorado a little easier.

My need for a swap/new engine was b/c the head gaskets blew in the 3.0 in March and I was faced with putting a new 3.0 or rebuilt/remaned one in or opting for the 3.4 swap. I decided that I LOVE this truck and wanted to go big or go home.. so to speak. My head gaskets blew on the way home from BigO - I had just dropped a ton of cash on new 31x10.50x15's and I've only put about 15 miles on them (from the shop to my house and then to my mechanic's shop) - i was really bummed - so i have brand new tires - nubs still on them - and haven't been able to take this thing offroad. I bought the truck with a 2" suspension lift - I have a set of Old Man Emu shocks on it and the rig rides great! I just couldn't part with it. It's a rig I plan to own and continue to modify for years. I sold my ATV to purchase this truck 2 years ago and only had $2500 into until the hg blew. For the money this swap will cost, there wasn't anyway that I could pick up a more reliable, better riding lifted 4x4 for the cost of the swap - plus the body is in great condition and the interior is still really nice as well. The only problem that i've had with it is that it sometimes doesn't start, but my mechanic hooked it up with a bypass push button start - so I have a '91 push button start 4runner! it was cheap and it works everytime!
