Jake4x4's 1982 LN46 Dual Cab Hilux
Hello everybody, My name is Jake and I am from Brisbane in Australia.
I am 16 years old and on my Learners Permit and this is my 1982 LN46 Dual Cab Hilux. I decided to post a build up on this forum because I think you all would be interested because as far as I am aware, this model never came out in dual cab in the states.
This is going to be a slow build up as I am still in school and don't have the time or the money to do all the things I would like at this point in time. This is going to be a very mild build compared to the rest on this forum because Australian modification laws are just horrible. I hope to build this to be a capable offroad truck which I can daily drive.
Background:
1982 LN46 Hilux which I picked up for a very cheap price in May this year with a leaking injector pump and no brakes. It was pretty clean for it's age and only has 222000kms on the clock. The only major rust was in the firewall/guard area were these are known to rust. The last owner has done some very dodgy bog repairs which I am fixing.
What I've done:
- Rebuilt injector pump and cleaned up the head while it was off
- Full brake rebuild with new master cylinder
- Painted rims & bullbar black
- Welded up rust in the firewall and tub
- Fixing some of the hail dents in the bonnet and roof
- Some front bucket seats
- Clarion USB headunit with 6 1/2" 3 was speakers
- New right and left hand guards
- Custom steel tray
Plans for the future:
- Get it roadworthy and registered
- Full Respray
- 2-3 inch Suspension lift
- Rock sliders
- 33" mud tyres
- 5 Speed gearbox conversion
- Re-do more of the interior
- Engine Conversion ; Possibly 2.4L Diesel or V6
- Snorkel
- Diff Breathers
Now for the pictures you've all been waiting for, I'll trying to order them and label, I have hundreds of pictures so if you want to see anything particular just ask away.
The first night I picked it up
A better picture the day after with a bit of a polish
How it sat for a few months while the engine was apart
Out of the shed, on my brothers 33's while mine were being painted
Painted wheels and bar
How it sits now in preparation for the respray
I will continue to update this thread as my vehicle progresses, sorry for the large photos and I hope I didn't write too much!

Hey guys, thanks for all the positive comments, the old lux is coming along well. I should have it on the road in the next month or two.
For those who haven't seen the back seat I've taken a quick picture while the rain has stopped today. I still need to get some new floor vinyl so bare with me for the moment. There isn't really much leg room with the seats all the way back and I wouldn't want to be the one sitting in there on long trips but it's good for storing things that you don't want to get wet. Excuse all the mess, alot of the pieces are everywhere.

I don't know which is cooler: That truck or the fact that there are 16-y/o kids out there who are so well-written on the internet!
Seriously, though, that truck is sweet!

Not very easily found in Australia, I've seen a few single cabs and only one other dual cab around the area where I live. They pop up on ebay every now and then but never in decent condition.
A bit of an update:
I gave up on trying to repair the tub last week and went and picked up this custom steel tray off a mate of mine for a very cheap price. All it needs it a coat of paint and maybe some new diamond plate for the floor and I'll be cleaning up and painting the chassis while I have the tray off and will probably be adding some sort of water tank system.
With the tray off:
The new tray:

I've been pretty busy for the past few days. The new tray is fitted although I still have to clean it up and respray. I've also spent the day fixing all of the hail dents in the roof and only got about half way done. More of that tomorrow. The lux got it's first decent drive today. All I can say is that she's not going anywhere fast with the 2.2 and the 4 speed.
If anybody has any information about fitting a newer model 2.4 and a 5 speed to a first gen, I would appreciate it although I'm not sure if the american models had the same engines.
A picture of the tray fitted up:
Thanks!

Well no progress for the past few weeks as I have been busy with school and work but that's almost over. I may be buying another ute in a few weeks so not much progress until I find out if its for sure or not but anyway.
Next week I will be picking up a 3 inch lift kit which should make the ride better and a bonnet to replace my stuffed one. Only one more week of school so over the christmas 10 week break I will be hopefully be fully repainting, re-doing the interior and fixing the little things for Registration.
That's all for now!
