3.4 Swap Wiring Questions/ Issues

Donor: 1997 4Runner SR5 Auto
Recip: 1989 Truck Manual

Using Auto ECU, keeping manual trans.

So far I have:

Re-used 3.0 Alternator harness, put 3.4 plug onto it, and hooked the starter to the battery.

Hooked up:

IG2 pin (Pin 8 Black/Red on Connector II3 from 4Runner to Pin 9 Black/Red on Connector C1 from truck)
Tacho Pin (Pin 15 Black/Red Connector II3 to Pin 20 Black C2 Connector)
Water Temp Sender (Pin 21 Yellow/Red II3 to Pin 14 Yellow/Green C2 Connector)
Oil Pressure Switch ( Pin 22 Green White II3 to Pin 11 Yellow/Blue C2)
Check Engine Light (Pin 2 Blue II1 to Pin 4 Blue C1)
Speed Sensor (E12 H Pin 12 Green/Orange to C1 Pin 13 Green/Blue)
Stop Light Switch (E12 Pin 25 Green/White to C1 Pin 1 Green/White)

What I am missing/unsure how to wire:

EFI Relay??
Circuit Opening Relay?
Fool A/T ECU into thinking its in neutral?
Starter??
Anything else I am missing here???

go to toyota.techinfo.com, 10 bucks a day gets you 24 hr access to all the wiring diagrams for your truck and donor truck. Save em to your computer and print them out. Then just go through all the diagrams and play matchmaker with the diagrams. As for the auto thing? you got me i found a manual donor. For the starter, i ran a wire from the starter to the black and white wire in the stater relay under the hood.

I have a question for you, i know you not done but do you think you will be able to make this work with teh auto ecu?

Im about in the same boat.. Well i am about to buy one.

I am not saying that this will work, this is what I would do if I was stuck in the same situation as you guys (ar and 904runner) with trying to use an auto ecu with a manual transmission.

On the 97 runner auto ecu would need to see a few things to make sure the auto trans is working. You will need some resistors to make the ecu think that everything is still ok.

E9 pins 27, 11, and 17 will need resistors that are approx 13 ohms to duplicate the solenoids resistance. Each one should have its own resistor and the resistor should be grounded on the other side. I think that 10 ohm resistors should work if you can not find any 13's.

E10 pins 4 and 9, this is where the ecu is looking for the output shaft speed. A 600 ohm resistor going between the two pins should do it.

E12 pin 12, leave that one open for now. This is where the ecu finds the veh speed from the gauge cluster. It is looking for a pulsation when you are moving, but if it thinks that you are in park you may get away with nothing there. If it sets a p0500 you may need to play with some resistors that are grounded on the other side to see if you can make the ecu happy.

E12 pin 17, grounded to make the ecu think that the t-case is in neutral.

E10 pins 12 and 22, this is where the ecu is looking for a good transmission temperature. Short out these two pins with a 100 ohm resistor and you should be good there.

I am not saying that everything here is right, but it should get you in the ball park. As far as the relays go, just hook them up like the 5vz diagrams have it shown. The smaller wire on the starter you will need to run from your original fuse block down to the starter. The engine harness on a 5vz does not have this so I tapped this wire off of the starter relay on the passenger side of the truck and just ran the wire down to the starter myself on my swap.

this is the email he sent me not really a writeup but if you have the FSM it sounds doable

The factory service manual is key to getting this job done correctly. You can find an electronic version of this online for free buy doing a search for "tacoma fsm". It is a little tricky, but not impossible. The automatic computer will only let the vehicle engage the starter if it thinks the transmission is in Neutral or Park. There are two wires that you need to connect to complete this circuit (which you will also wire through your clutch cancel button and clutch pedal). This will allow you to start the engine. The clutch start cancel button and clutch pedal switch were wired into the park wire of the automatic computer. This will essentially (when the clutch pedal is depressed OR the clutch cancel button is pushed) tell the computer that the truck is in park/neutral. This is done to prevent the vehicle from unintentionally starting in gear.

The reverse lights are connected directly to your transmission reverse light sensor. This will engage your reverse lights. The only problem with this is that when you put the vehicle in reverse it will see that the truck is in both reverse and park/neutral at the same time causing a check engine light. You can probably get past this using a relay that will turn off the park/neutral signal as soon as you put the truck in reverse.

You will also need to hook up a resistor to the transmission temperature sensor. I cant remember the resistor ohm range, however it is specified in the fsm. I had to order mine online because it was difficult to find here locally.

Last, you will have to trick the computer into thinking it is seeing the proper signals from the shift solonoids. This is accomplished by using resistors, again specified in the FSM.

And from what I understand this guy was in cali so he had to deal with smog

You could just use a M/T harness and ECU. I may even swap you one for yours.

If you have any helpful tips or tricks please let me know

I have a 2000 toyota tacoma 3.4L engine
with an automatic transmission wiring harness on it but the previous owner manual swapped it and didn't bother to wire in the reverse light sensor
