Agreed. Aside from an engine hoist and stand, you really don't need much in the way of special tools. Research here and other sites where the swap is documented and take your time.

Don't put a time limit on yourself like I did...and don't do it if it's your only vehicle

I wish i knew more about the 3.4L swap when i bought my 4runner for $500. Instead i rebuilt the bottom end for th e 5 rods that were burnt and since then its been giving me crap! Now that the 3.slow is officially dead its time for a 3.4 swap! Ill be reading up on it alot and seeing what i gotta do. and like most everyone else im on a budget. Only if i had the money to do an automatic-manual transmission swap

300 buck swap

After finding this site, and having my heart set on getting a 4 runner i decided to go ahead with this swap.

4runner

Found a 1992 4runner with manual trans on Craigslist in Las Vegas with a blown motor for $500 bucks. The 4 runner has 92,000 original miles and is very clean.

Motor

The motor is from a 2000 tacoma with manual trans, 94,000 miles. Purphased for $700, that came with everything i wanted. I had to go pull it myself and could basically take any little thing i wanted.

Replaced timing belt and water pump, new plugs and wires.

Oil Pan and Dipstick

I used the 3.0 oil pan, baffle, pickup tube. The 3.4 i have needed to be drilled for the dipstick, I drilled the new hole and used the original 3.0 dipstick, just made a custom bracket to mount it.

Fan, Motor mounts, Oil Pressure Sender and Radiator

All of this was used off the 3.0

Clutch

I got a new aisin clutch kit from WABFAB, great product, shipped quick and good price highly recommended.

Wiring

As for the wiring, i decided i could not afford the harness from ORS so i had no choice to do it myself.
What i did is cut plugs off the 3.0 that went to the dash and body harness, also cut the 3.4 ones and matched them together.

So i got on TIS and identified each wire and matched them up, there are only a handful needed to get it running. I ran a wire from the starter to the starter relay wire on the 3.0 Body harness plug. All this was done with out taking any harness off the motor. This is not the way alot of people do it, probably because it is not was clean or not as easy as re pinning, but this is how i figured it out.

Exhaust

For the exhaust i followed Jason4x4 thread to make your own crossover, which worked perfect with plenty of clearance.

Hood

For the hood all i had to do was cut the supports out and everything fits with decent clearance, no body lift.

The 4 runner all done

Price List
4 runner- $500
Motor- $700
Timing belt, plugs, wires, water pump- $265
Clutch-$220
Intake- $230
Misc- $50

Total- $1965
Give or take a few bucks

Well that is pretty much it, i left out a bunch of stuff that is common to every swap.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me and to this great site, couldn't have done it without it all.
I just wanted to show people that you can do this for around $2000.
I had a project truck in the back yard I purchased a 4 runner wrecked for 300 and havent bought a m.j anything else and its now running
