Insure or register a newly bought vehicle before driving it home from another state?

Just like it says. If I fly out to WA, buy an old truck and plan to turn around that same day and drive it back to Montana, how do I cover myself? I'm ok with bending the law a bit, but I don't want to really do anything stupid. What's the best way to mostly cover myself in this kind of situation?

Thanks!

best bet is to call your current insurance and provide them with VIN, year make model etc.

Ok, thanks, I thought of maybe doing that. I called the current owner and they say they'll maintain their registration and insurance until I get it under mine, but I'll definitely call my agent tomorrow and see what he says.

Then...if everything goes smoothly, all the Pre-84 folks will see a new thread...

I traveled from NY to Vermont to buy a truck.
After having a look at it I called Geico spoke to the young lady and that was it.
Pain free.

I would either quickly get it insured, or have it towed or thrown on a flatbed. Easiest method would just be some quick insurance. If you got pulled over I am sure they would understand you want to have it registered at home. Have to have insurance before you can register it anyways, right?

EDIT: I'm sure that reply was delayed.
