Home made velocity stack

First off not sure if this is the best place for this thread. I was reading about a velocity stack air intake some guys built. Here's the link. http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/tech/velocitystack-mod-cheap-and-easy-horsepower-and-torque-gain-on-toyota-trucks-52540.html
same principle as the deck plate mod. I'm trying to figure out how important it is that the top rim has that funnel shape. Or if I could just weld a flange on a piece of aluminum pipe so that I could screw a deck plate onto the top that way I could close it off if I wanted to. I don't know maybe I'm missing the whole point of this mod. But the put there 3rd gen 4runner on the dump and got a 8 up gain and 8 ft pounds of tourqe.

oh boy I remember the thread on here about that thing, the thread itself got ugly. good luck. If you search on here I am sure you will find it if the mods had not deleted that thread.

Hah! It's alive!

I wrote that story. It's good tech, but don't tell the naysayers. Some people just like to whine and doubt. Probably a self-esteem issue... Email me if you want to know more, but I put most of the info on off-road.com.
