Timing 89 22re comp cam
Hey guys, just a quick question! Just had engine rebuilt , 89 22re 5 speed , complete overhaul. I installed the comp 252 cam in the process, per comp.. I set the vfm 1 click counter clockwise and added some advance to timing. The 22re in this 4runner likes about 30* btdc with no pinging! Does that seem like alot of timing considering the cam? What gives?

30* is more than double the reccommended specs. I have no first hand knowledge about changing the AFM (its AFM not VFM), but I know most people run 268 & 261* cams with no adjustment to the AFM.
I think you have some bigger issues going on here. When you changed cams, did you just do that or did you do some other engine work too?

Nope just the cam! It was suggested by machine shop! Called comp and they said the smallest cam they make will work with efi! I just wanted a nice running little rig. Shoot it barley hits 65 mph! I have read and read only thing I can come up with is cam timing!

I know what u mean. I picked it up today from them, second time they had it. First time they put a cam that was to big , and it ran like s::t. So I had them swap it to the smaller one and now this. Got home timing set at 24* an it was sluggish. I knew then something didn't jive. I played with it got it to 30* and it started to run good. This blows, who has time to go back an forth dealing with stupidity! I'm done with these guys!
