Manual transmission fluid advice
What's up guys I need some I'm trying to decide what would be the best bet to go with in the way of transmission fluid. It has to be for a manual and just want to know if anyone's got any thoughts or advice about it.

Go Buy 5 gallons of whatever your truck calls for.Can be easily bought close to home.

I installed a new rebuilt marlin crawler w56 last summer, and i'm breaking it in with the cheapest gear lube I can find... $16 a gallon?

redline fluid is highly overrated, and it sucks in cold weather, among other things:

Marlin W56 recommended and project nearly done
Hi, I know this thread is a bit old, but I have a similar or further question. I'm about to install my new Marlin HD W56 transmission in my '86 4Runner and I see on their website that they "Strongly recommend" a GL-5 for the first 5-10,000 miles. http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/gu...allation-notes
However everything I read says that GL-5 in these is bad for the synchro's (Brass?). I called Marlin today and the sales guys answer to my question didn't give me a warm fuzzy fealing. "Run whatever makes you feel good"....really? thanks a lot.
So anybody in the know able to chime in with reasons why they might recommend this? I had MT90 in the old transmission and plan on switching back to it after the 10,000 mile break in of "no synthetic". Do they want to break down the new synchros bit on purpose to help shorten the break in period?
This is a long term rebuild (about 4 years) and a "forever truck" so I want to do whatever is going to get me the best performance and longevity out of this expensive transmission.
I know posts are always more fun to read with pictures so here are a few before and after shots, as well as the main reason why this is has been a (4 year project. I started it shortly after he was born, this is him helping at 2 and now he's almost 4.

You're correct in wanting to run GL4. GL5 does have an ingredient that is known to eat yellow metals, i.e. Brass...
Although a lot of the GL4/5 fluids now have a neutralizer for said ingredient, at least this is my understanding. So run GL4/5 non-synthetic for the break-in period, then switch to MT90.
On a side note, how long did it take you to get that trans? I need to order a W56B, but they're site keeps saying 6-8 wks out...

Yeah, that was the plan with the fluid, got some Mag1 GL-5 (as they recommend) 80-90 for the break in.
Trans did take a while, but as this was/is a long term project I didn't pay too much attention or keep track of how long. I think I ordered mid July and it arrived early Sept.

Run cheap 80-90 and change it once a year. Redline is fine if you are a racer.
You do not need it for a dd or light trail rig. If it makes you feel better to fill your case with money...go for it.
Please dont fall for the hype of alleged oil gurus. The one singing the highest praises are the ones selling it.
I have never, ever, ever, seen a failure of a trans, transfercase, or diff because the oil was not good enough.

Highlux, I don't disagree with that. My thought process comes from myself. I DD my truck, but my commute can be 500+ miles/day. So once a year for me can be 50K miles. And yes I drive an '84 Toy pickup 4wd around the country...270K miles and still ticking...
I agree with changing once a year for even the cheapest of oils would be fine. But that's with a 30min commute. Which is all most people have. The oil barely has time to get to operating temp, much less start to break down the oil. But I can drive 12-15 hrs in a day. Only stopping for 10min fuel/bathroom break every few hrs. So my logic is that I want a good quality oil that resist breaking down, that contains contaminants, and protects the components. I don't trust house brand oils to do all that for 600 miles non-stop for weeks on end....
And yes I run $10/qt Royal Purple oil for the engine. Running at 3,000+ RPM all day long, I want protection. And I get it, even with 5K miles between changes.

I agree, my old one was significantly smoother when I changed over to MT90. I'm sure there are other excellent lubes put there as well, have had good experience with various Amsoil products in the past.
Still would love to hear some educated guesses about why Marlin Crawler would "STRONGLY ADVISE" the GL-5 in their transmissions. (they use the caps and all).

Redline mt90 for me. Truck shifts better and runs noticeably more quiet. The transmission doesn't take that much oil and it lasts a long time. What's 45 bucks a year? I spend that much on a tank of gas...
