Cold start high idle?

87 22r 5spd factory carb. Aisin? I'm not familiar with these types of carbs. When its cold i can pump the gas pedal a couple times an it fires right up. However it doesn't high idle. Is this adjustable by the choke stat?

There is an adjustment screw to alter the rpms of the Fast Idle Cam. Toyota spec is 2,600-3,000 rpms for fast idle. Or the cam and/or spring itself is in need of some cleaning to get 25 years of gunk off of it.

I had a chance to tinker with it a little bit at lunch an after work today. I found the idle speed screw was adjusted all the way out, so I threw a tach in it an it was idling at about 350rpm's, smoothly at that..lol. I adjusted the idle speed to 700rpm like factory spec suggested..I thought it sounded rather loud an excessive idling so I backed it down to 550rpm's. I saw the A/c idle screw was adjusted all the way out aswell, however I let that be for now. I will adjust the Fast idle screw tomorrow now that I know where it is. Thanks for the pictures they are a huge help!

The red wire in the above picture goes to the choke stat is that suppose to be a power or ground with the ignition key on?

The red wire goes to the choke coil which will disengage the automatic choke. It is powered (12 volts positive) via the alternator with the engine running. With only the key on/engine off, only a small amount of power gets to the choke coil. Ground is through the carburetor body.

The choke on the OEM Aisan carburetor is an Automatic Choke, not an electric choke. The choke circuit does not need any power to engage the choke, only power to open (disengage) the choke. All of this is, of course, on a correctly operating choke system.

If I get time tonight to tinker, I will adjust the fast idle screw an see if it corrects my no high idle cold. I'm not sure if the choke is actually working properly the way it is set right know. The index marks on the choke coil are from being lined up. I'm wondering if it was giving the PO problems an not opening so it was rigged to run with it open.

I found the fast idle screw was adjusted all the way out an seems to be frozen/seized. There is no power at any time to the choke stat. I'm thinking the PO had it set to not operate due to the possibility of it not working correctly. I'm going to leave it alone for now since the truck runs an drives fine. I'll just save up an put a weber on it an be done with it.

Two things, if you wish to investigate before your Weber conversion, check continuity or ohms resistance of the coke coil at the choke power wire and carb body ground. You may have a broken choke coil.

Second, to check power at the connector plug on the alternator side, not the carburetor side. You would follow the choke red power wire down to where it connects to the wire harness. At that connector you can back-probe the alternator side to see if you are getting power up to that connector or not.
