88 4runner 3.4 swap transmission and other questions
so ive been doing a lot of research on 3.4 swap information and tips for my 88 4runner. i have never jumped into a project this big on my truck, but i really want to and im sure i can tackle it. im just trying to see what i will need, what works with what etc. i have a pretty good idea so far but im wondering about the transmissions . the receiving truck is an automatic 3.0 4runner that i would like to make into a 3.4 manual 4runner. if i was to get a 3.4 MT donor vehicle, could i swap both the engine and transmission to the '88? what kind of extra modifications would i have to do as if any? i could just keep the 3.0 tranny but its auto and not nearly as fun to drive. from what im reading, keeping the old tranny is the way to go. just trying to narrow down my options so i can start looking for parts.

This is what you should do. Do a 5spd swap to the runner using a 3.0 5spd. The transfer case on the 3.4 trans is a left hand drop and yours currently is a right hand drop. Also your auto transfer case will not bolt up to a manual transmission. Find someone parting a 3.0 runner your year and grab the trans, transfer with the crossmember and driveshafts.

You need to do some more research before doing your swap.
The stuff Vitale said is rudimentary 3.4 swap knowledge and is in reality the easy stuff on this swap. Much harder issues to deal with you will discover when you get onto it.

Yeah, I won't be attempting this anytime soon. There's still plenty of life in the 3.0 right now. I just am trying to figure out what my options. I might just stick with the auto trans that's in it now. Before I do the engine swap I'd like to get a lift and some lockers. Any reccomendations? I mostly take it up to silver lake sand dunes and cuising around in the summertime topless.

so i was sort of in the same line. of thought. i have a 3.0 with an auto and if i wanted to do a 3.4 swap and use a manuel transmission it would have to be a 3.0 manuel transmission right? would there be any way to use a 3.4 manuel transmission and transfercase, and possible the front 3.4 ifs?

Offroad solutions is back in business making 3.4 swaps... i used their kit... sooo much nicer and definately worth it.
I had to use a new engine wiring harness, but it made it so much easier. (some years you cannot convert, 1998 auto/manual you can use an auto harness with a manual OR auto ECU...)

Is ORS really open? I checked the website and it still says that they are closed. I'm only a header away from starting my swap so the wiring kit from them will be the last part I will need (hopefully ).
