1983 transmission help
I have an 83, just installed a new clutch kit, plus master and slave, because I was having troubles shifting, also changed the shifter bushing and cup as well as changed the gear oil. After I was driving it for a couple miles, it became really hard to find gears, and get out of gears. In the end, it was stuck in third gear. That's how its sits now. I'm sure the tranny is screwed.
Question: I found a L52 Transmission, but it would have to be shipped. I also found a G52 Transmission with T-case locally, would that bolt up without mods? Driveline mods, etc? Its seems that they were maybe both available on an 83 truck. Sorry for such newbie Q's, but to Toyota 4x4's I am.

Before making a trans change I would install a clutch slave cylinder from a 1979 Toyota 4x4 truck. This slave cylinder is spring loaded and has adjustment nuts so you can really adjust your clutch properly. I also would check the clutch fork for fatigue. I have a L52 trans and I have never had any problems with it. I do not know what clutch kit you used, I use Center Force clutches because many other brands have troubles after a new install on Toyota trucks.

Is the tranny jammed or is the clutch just not disengaging? If it is the trans, try "rocking" the truck to try to relieve whatever is binding it up. When my L50 went out on me I could shift to any gear, 4th was the only one that didn't clunk and bang. I think that clutch/hydrolic issue is more likely. Check the clutch pedal hanger bracket isn't cracked (they like to do this, then pedal "deflects" instead of getting a full stroke on the master cylander), also check slave cyl, throw out fork, ect. for propper operation.
I believe the G series is longer so you would likely need driveline mods.

HI, I didn't want to start a new thread so i figured i'd post here. I recently swapped the 4 speed transmission on my 82 pickup (L45 transmission) with and 5 speed (L52 Transmission). I used my original Tcase and swapped it over to the L52. Everything bolted on directly with no problems; even installed a brand new MC clutch kit+flywheel.
The issue I'm having is that the lever that came with the L52 wont shift into 4th gear since it makes contact with the tcase, but works perfectly well with the lever from my L45. My question is, why are they making contact? and can i get away with using my 4 speed lever?
thanks,
Alex
