Solved Code 71 - EGR VSV!

So, I finally got around to replacing the VSV. Sure enough, when I got the old one off I looked into the vacum tube that points out towards the wheel well. It was clogged real good. It looks like the metal vacum tube that the other end of the hose attaches to had corroded on the end and the residue clogged the VSV.

CEL is OFF!!!! Finally.

Did you have any drivability issues?

I am not sure what issues you are tlaking about? My 4Runner drives fine I guess it's had the CEL the hole time I have owned it. I hope if I ever fix this code it will improve MPG of HP. But I think thats the hope of all 3.0 owners

The EGR VSV is the green one that's in a group of three on top of the passenger side wheel well. It has part no. 90910-12075 on the side in white under "TOYOTA". I didn't have any driveability issues that I can distinguish from my burnt exhaust valve.

If you don't have a FSM check out the '93 online FSM that's been mentioned here a bunch.

What I meant was did it effect the way the truck ran?

Not that I know of, like I said it's been on the hole time I have owned the truck. It runs like it always has for me. I don't have a frame of refferance to work off of, this is my first 3.0. Having said that it gets me up and down the interstate at 70mph and gets and avg. of 18mpg with 31" and stock gears.

I sent this PM to Bryan. But, if figured that it might help others if it got into the archives. Anyway, learn from my bumbling efforts! And thanks again to this great community!

[Quote]Here's the low down. When I got the light I ran the code using the jumper wire and got the EGR code. I checked the FSM and found that the code could be generated by any malfunction in the vacum system but I was too lazy to do all the diagnostic checks listed in the FSM. So, I started by removing the EGR valve to check it out. Of course, in removing the EGR valve I broke off the bottom threads. The cast iron valve body had rusted around the top of the nut. So, I had to buy a new valve and pipe assembly. OUCH! I put the new parts on and that didn't fix the light. Bummer! I put a new modulator on because that was the problem the last time I had the light. Nope, not the problem this time. Then, I broke down and bought a new temp sensor figuring that in a 15 year old truck that had to be the problem. Nope, not the sensor either. By now all the new EGR parts are looking very shiny in my engine compartment. Lastly, I decided to replace the VSV. When I removed the VSV I noticed that the tube that points toward the passenger side fender was all plugged up inside. I pulled the vacum hose off the other end where the metal vacum tubes go under the plenum. Sure enough, the end of the metal tube was corroded and I'm sure all the corrosion residue is what clogged the VSV. I cleaned up the end of the metal tube and blew out the tube real good. A new length of vacum hose and the new VSV spelled no more CEL light for awhile as I drove to Mammoth from OC. On the way the CEL light went on again and I almost pulled over and torched the truck. But, the light went off, then on, then off again. It's remained off ever since. I think the light was going on intermittently due to the aggressive Seafoaming that I did before I left on the trip. When my oxygen sensor went out the CEL light went off and on like that. I read on YotaTech that Seafoaming can gum up the O2 sensor. I think the gum burnt off. In any case I'm still CEL light and code free! I hope this helps my friend.

P.S. The scary thing is this is how some dealers fix problems . . just replacing part with out any trained diagnosis. They charge for the labor too! I got great deals on all the parts at Toyota of Dallas (Strap22) which made the whole thing a lot less painless. I learned a heck of a lot too! [Quote]

I cleared the code after every attempt to fix my code. There's always a delay before the computer registers the code and the CEL comes on. I never checked to see how much time or how many miles it took for the code to reappear. So, yes I think that's normal.

Check trdparts4u.com. Shoot Phil (Strap22) a PM or email. The guys at Toyota of Dallas have great prices and great service. I don't remember how much the vsv was. But, I know I got the best deal from Toyota of Dallas.

The green vsv on the right in the first picture is the one we're talking about. The second picture is a good shot including the EGR valve and the temp sensor.
