If it is at the least, 15 miles per tank more, at a modest 2.50/gallon that means the MSD pays for itself with around 8 full tanks. And after that its putting money back in your pocket....

I am going to be putting in an MSD and I was wondering, Morpine, do you know what's inside the tach adapter? OR does anyone? I'd really rather not spend 50 dollars on what may be very cheap electronics when purchased at radioshack or such...

So in my continued reading I've found out the tach adapter essentially amplifies the voltage signal from the coil...or at least the voltage to the ECU...anyway I still don't want to pay 50$ for it. Any ideas? Morphine wanna take your tach adapter apart?

MIC09dcsm, do you know what tach adapter you need? I have one sitting around here, I can get rid of, but not sure if it's the right one for ya. Pretty sure it's not, but want to be sure.

According to many sources, I will need an MSD 8910EIS tach adapter to make my MSD igntion box work with my 3VZ-E.

That's too bad. I'm surprised nobody knows what's in them though. I've heard of them going out, if mine does I'll be sure to open it up and see what it consists of.

I'm a little confused Morphine, the tach adapter 8910EIS instructions say the black wire should go to original coil's negative, and that the positive output from the tach apapter should be joined with the small red wire that comes from the ignition box to supply 12V and turn the box on...

EDIT: I wasn't reading correct that you connect the small MSD ign box wire with the coil positive and tach adapter red, also was misunderstanding the instruction pictures.

necroing a dead thread

My ignition coil and igniter are toast. bought MSD 6AL, High vibration offroad coil, and adaptor

can i wire the MSD setup without the original coil and igniter ? or did i waste $200 on this stuff and still need OEM parts?

if so what changes should be made to this guide ?

I just bought the 6a and a blaster coil for my 87 p/u with 22r. After reading this thread I will call tech support tomorrow regarding whether or not I need the tach adapter. Any feedback you guys have regarding whether or not I need the tach adapter would help. Thanks.

I had a 6a in mine w/ 22re.

I does improve driveability, & low end grunt. its also harder to stall out.

Downside is they EAT secondary ignition parts, Always carry spares and a spark plug wrench.

They do hate water, I've rusted two out already so over do the silicone thing.

Nice to have... but cost to keep.

Stock Coil

Stumbled on to this thread - Great write up!

The guys at AutoZone swear up and down that I cannot install an MSD on my 94 3.Go. I tow a fairly heavy trailer, and I need any boost i can get. My two main questions are:

1: - Can I use the stock coil with a 6A? or will I have a melt down and fire?

2: - I have a OEM in-dash Tach, what exactly does the adapter do? I thought it received its signal from the Ignighter which I understand is retained in this setup.

----

Side questions - I read everywhere that Advancing timing is going to make me "go better".. When towing or really climbing hills... Should I be advancing or retarding? And would having the in-dash adjuster for the MSD be of benefit in this situation? I Find that my 3.go has very little bottom end, and I cant make power under 3,500-4,500 RPM this sucks for towing... Is there any adjustment that can bring the power band down on this engine?

Thanks in advance --

Better to use the correct matching coil.
You may need a diode or two in parallel (watts thing) to get the flyback right. I had to use three smaller diodes to get mine to work right because there was so much current in the circuit.

Also you WILL melt out your secondary ignition system with this unit. Do not expect even race quality parts to stand up to regular DD use. At some point it all fails and you get no power at all, none; it starts but you're not moving.
That said low end torque is FANTASTIC! but you will pay for it.

Aftermarket ignitions are a complete waste of money unless you have some serious engine work done and/or need the adjustable rev-limiter. I ran one on my veezy for a few years and went back to stock when it died. Didn't notice a lick of difference in power or mileage.

The stock ignition with quality (OEM) components is, in my opinion, absolutely best for these trucks. The only times I've needed a tow were when my fan pulley bracket grenaded and when my MSD ignition crapped out.

91 toyota msd help

I decided to do this because as I searched on Yotatech and other Toyota forums I found that more than a handful of people had asked about this process and yet none of their threads ever got a complete or suitable answer.

I used some basic information from Yotatech, the MSD forums, and the FSM to get this done. I posted this in the "86-95 Trucks and 4Runners" section since this is the era that the 3VZE engine was utilized so it only made sense to me. So here goes.

Parts installed::
MSD-6A Ignition Control box:: Part No. 6200
MSD Blaster 2 Coil:: Part No. 8202
MSD Universal Col Bracket:: Part No. 8213
MSD Tach Adapter EIS (Electronic Ignition System):: Part No. 8910EIS

Here is what the parts look like:
Attachment 180828

1.) First thing you will want to do is disconnect your battery. SAFETY FIRST!

2.) You will want to find a suitable place to setup and install the devices. This is only a "Dry" fitting so you don't need to secure anything down yet. Here is where I plan on installing mine:
Attachment 180829

Here is the "dry" fitting:
Attachment 180830

In this picture I have already disconnected and removed the factory coil and igniter. These are the 2 devices I removed:
Attachment 180831

and
Attachment 180832

DO NOT THROW AWAY THE SECOND UNIT! YOU WILL NEED IT TO CONNECT INTO THE NEW SYSTEM.

3.) When the "dry" fitting is done you will want to make your cables the appropriate length. I had to lengthen the positive and negative cables so that they will run from the battery to the MSD-6A Ignition Control box.

Red 14ga to Positive Battery.
Black 14ga to Negative Battery.

4.) You'll take the Tach Adapter EIS (PN 8910EIS) there is going to be a connector. You will connect it to the Magnetic Pick-up on your MSD-6A. Then the black will go your coil negative. And the red goes together with red 18ga from your MSD-6A and also your OEM Coil Positive.

White wire from your 6A will not be used.

Black/Red = Coil Positive
Black/White = Coil Negative

Here is the adapter from the OEM Coil that you will be tieing into.
Attachment 180833
It is the one with only 2 wires going into it. The other plug will be reconnected back to the stock unit.

In this next picture you can see the "Black and Red" and the "Black and White" wires:
Attachment 180834

5.) At this point there are no wires connected to your stock Coil...I chose to remove mine to lessen confusion.

6.) Now you should have two wires left. Orange and Black..

Orange is your Coil Positive.
Black is your Coil Negative.

7.) You are now ready to connect everything together and apply power. If all of your connections are good and secured, your truck/4Runner should fire right up.

Points of Interest::

On the OEM Coil I recommend that you peel back the "electrical" tape and expose more of the wires. Since you will need to cut into and splice into these here you want to give yourself plenty of "slack" for the just in case problem.

Here is how much I peeled back to make this easier for myself:
Attachment 180835

Next on Step #4 I said that you will need to connect the red wire, the red 18ga from the MSD-6A and your OEM coils power wire together. Here is how I did mine.
Attachment 180836

As you can see I simply joined the 2 red wires from the MSD equipment and connected it to the OEM "Black and Red" wire.

Well that pretty much sums it all up. It was quite simple and really didn't take that long at all. If you have questions or need any help just post away. If anyone would like a different picture I will do my best. Thanks!
