87 Truck knock sensor missing

I just bought a 87 4x4 with a 22re. It has a check engine light on and the code is for a knock sensor . Well, took a look and the knock sensor is MISSING. Wire is there with only a spade connector on it. So,, went to autozone and the sensor is over 200.00. Looked on ebay and they are about the same price. BUT, if you jump up to a 88 or later they are ALOT cheaper. I've checked all the local junk yards with no luck. Will a newer sensor work? Should I have something other than just a spade connector? The spade connector looks factory. I'm thinking something must be very different about the 87 sensor for it to be so much more expensive. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I would think that the sensors would be the same in all 22re motors, but I could be wrong. I would check with a toyota dealer first.

89615-35020 http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...615-35020.html for $170.43. RockAuto has the AirTex aftermarket part for $167.89. Covers 1985-1988 (so always use your VIN number when ordering, if you are anywhere near one of the "change" years. Or if you don't have 100% faith in my research.)

RockAuto has photos of the part for various years; they don't look too similar, and the connectors are very different. (The spade connector you have is not the correct connector; it's was probably something hacked together to try to use the wrong part.)

If I was you I would Retard the timing to about 3 degrees BTDC and run premium fuel until you can get it repaired. Just my two cents.

What is supposed to happen with a missing knock sensor is that the ECM retards the timing as far as it can, because it can't "tell" if the engine is already knocking. SoCal's suggestion (I believe) is to protect the engine just in case the ECM isn't doing what it's supposed to be doing, and somehow the ignition ends up advanced, not retarded. Retarding the base timing should make it end up so far retarded that I doubt it would run.

What to do? Fix the knock sensor before you do any serious driving.
