Bonjour! En anglais pour tous le monde.
Going up the hill to Vieux Quebec, maybe?
The 22R engine is 1970s technology. It runs a very long time, is quite durable, but cannot be accused of being either fast or powerful.
My turbo 4Runner was rated at 136hp stock (crank). I have a dyno post around here somewhere with it hitting nearly 180hp at the rear wheels (through an automatic, boys!) as we were playing with boost. Someday I'll be able to spend the $$ to make that a daily reality. In current trim, it's around 160hp at the crank. It's definitely not fast to 60, but acquits itself well with other Toyotas.
Here's some other Toyota folks talking about how slow their trucks are (for your amusement, not that many useful comments. There's a similar thread on Yotatech somewhere too.)

Actual times instead of snarky comments.

1993 Toyota Xtracab SR5 4x4 0-60 mph 11.8 Quarter mile 18.1 (Still a 22re)
1986 Toyota Celica GT-S 0-60 mph 8.5 Quarter mile 16.3 (lots lighter, still a 22re)
So... do a 0-60 run and report back.

BTW, not sure what the ticking sound is you're referring to, but a properly adjusted set of valves will tick (clatter?) at idle on a 22RE. If they're quiet, be afraid - they're too tight.

I put a lift kit, suspension lift on my 22RE 88 pick up (standard cab/bed) and put 30" tires on it. From that point forward, it was like I was constantly towing a boat. (I also have a camper shell and custom workspace in the bed as well (50 lbs worth of stuff). But as it was stated early on, I use the truck to haul cargo, not break land speed records. For its purpose, it works perfectly.
