why does my 84 pick up take so long to start in the morning

I pump the gas three times before trying to start it but it doesn't start it takes 20 tries before it actually starts only in the morning though I changed the fuel pump spark plugs and wires but it didn't change anything

While you repeat each "try" does the engine make any audible sounds of fuel cumbustion?

Have you checked the fuel filter? I had a similar occurrence on my 1980 P/U. Also. Did you check your timing?

I hate to fill your plate but there is a bunch MORE that really should be observed. The fuel "sock" in the fuel tank. That little wire to your carb. And inspect ALL grounds to engine and frame as well as fuel hoses and lines for fractures and deterioration. Good luck!

Anytime. I want to see these on the road and not in the crusher jaws. Any further questions feel free to ask. I'd rather see more of these where I live than Jeeps as well. Lol.

The following is based on the assumption that you truly have a 22R engine, e.g. carburetor, like it say as your screen name.

First, look at the fuel level in the carburetor bowl sight glass on a level surface.

Is the fuel in the middle of the glass window?

Second, on your next cold engine start, remove the top of the air cleaner. At the back of the carburetor is the throttle linkage. While rotating the throttle open & close (duplicating pressing the gas pedal to the floor & letting off) look inside the primary barrel to see if there is gas squirting from a small jet. This jet and the delivery of fuel will be in view but the jet is small. The primary barrel is the one towards the passenger fender. The secondary carburetor barrel is the one closest to the valve cover. If your choke is working properly you will need to open the choke plate as it will obstruct viewing the squirting fuel. Pressing the gas pedal to the floor will engage the automatic choke. Now be aware that when the choke plate closes, it creates sufficient vacuum to draw fuel from the slow speed fuel circuit as well as the primary fuel circuit.

First of all, does the choke plate close?

Then secondly, do you see gas squirting into the barrel?

If not you have one of two issues happening. One is the automatic choke is not functioning (closing) properly. Second, fuel in the carburetor bowl is draining. This is what's happening to me. Third, your Acceleration Pump is not working properly. The diaphragm maybe torn or cracked from age. But that would affect all engine acceleration when the engine is up to operating temperature.

Thanks for all the info! Turned out to be my choke wasn't functioning properly after a little research i found a set of brand new headers and weber 32-36 carb for the same price as fixing the choke so installed those with a 40 series off road edition flow master with 2 1/4 straight pipes runs like a champ now

I picked up some pace setter headers. They are some of the cheapest i found and didnt actually plan on getting them until i heard about the deal on craigslist and couldn't pass it up for less than the price of the carb (260) he threw in the headers both brand new with the papers but not Ca smog legal. The headers increased the stock manifold size from 1 1/4" one piece to the new 4 to one of 1 5/8" huuuge difference and best mod yet! I can actually pass people on the freeway.
