diffs and tcase(how much gear oil needed?)
I have an 85 4runner. I am going to drain and refill the diffs and tcase. I use 80-90W gear oil right? Roughly how much am I going to need. Any addatives that I should use? Thanx

GL4 is hard to find, I've discovered. A lot of GL4/5 is out there but I've heard the components in GL5 gear oils do bad things to the brass synchros in the tranny. The only GL4 specific oil I found was Redline MT90. Its about 10 dollars a quart but its good stuff, sticks to all the gears. MT90 is made especially for our vehicles, btw. Also I've heard you dont NEED MT90 in the TCase but if you're worried about the Tcase and Transmission mixing oils, MT90 aint gonna hurt.

I found this @ Napa for $13 or so. I'm a cheapskate. I do use GL4/5 semi-synth 75w-90 in everything but the transmission. Yes, I know it says 80w or higher for the diffs, but I can't find it cheap enough in the synth blend.

Well I got the diffs done, but when I went to do the tranny and transfer case I started to round off the bolts. I tried using a socket with a breaker bar and a box end wrench. I've got them soaking with some wd-40. Any other ideas?

Try some PB Blaster and after a day give them a 'tap' on the end with a hammer them more PB, wait a day and then try them. Is not try heat, not to much though. THis worked on mine, one PB and time the other took a bit of heat, both came out OK. Heat can be your friend as ling as you are careful, especially on aluminium.
FWIW WD realy won't do much for freeing up fasteners, not like PB or even better Kroil.
