This. That 22re doesn't make a lot of HP at it's best. It's geared to compensate for that, but an old motor and tires even slightly larger than stock will still destroy your acceleration.

The automatic doesn't help, but try regearing for your tires first.

You should have 4.30s, if they're stock.

I assume your automatic is shifting correctly, right? I only ask because, before I bought my friend's truck, he was complaining about his 85 22RE auto. When I took a ride with him, I noticed his truck wasn't shifting. He stuck it in D expecting it to shift 1-2-3 from a dead stop. But in reality the transmission was stuck in 3rd. Once I told him to "manually" shift the gears, the truck got up to speed a lot quicker. It is still slow and won't beat a 5spd, but at least we can get on a freeway onramp with a little more confidence of not being run over.

Just for yucks, try replacing the O2 sensor if it's gone more than 80K miles. I got a dramatic increase in pep by doing it at 107K.

How many miles are on it? I got a 86 with 22re Auto and ran 35s on it and did fine. It wasnt gonna pass much on the highway but it did fine and it has 211,000 on the stock engine. When I had 31s it was getting 18-20mpg in the city/highway mix. I'd get the other engine built and put it back in.

I had an auto behind my turbo and it sucked ace off the line! You would have to power brake it if you were going to jump even the biggest gaps. I threw a 5 speed in it and it feels like a completely different truck! BTW, I run 31's and stock 4:10 gears
