I stumbled upon an R151/F today and a W56 while looking for a transfer. My goal is to swap in the 5vzfe in a couple years and I know the r151/f tranny is the king of trannies with the 23 spline etc for the first/second gen yotas. What trannies are used with the 5vzfe swaps, would the r151/f be a better option or the one that is typically used in that swap? Just trying to see if it would be in my best interests to pick this thing up. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to let the guy know asap whether I want it or not. Thanks.

Some info was provided by wabfab to me on this. The r150 is used with the 3.4's and to use duals (4cyl setup) with a 150 swap on a 3.4 they both need to be top shift transfers.

I run a 3.4 with the R151F, and duals.

Any R-series trans will work. Just know that you will have to get different drivelines, modify the floor, and use a different trans crossmember. The R151F shift tower sits under the radio pocket (way far forward). If you get an R150F (V6 trans) you won't have to modify the floor, as its a top shift case and the transm shifter sits further back on the top of the trans.

My R151F first case is a forward shift, and my 2nd case is a top shift. Both cases do not need to be top shift if you use an R151F. If you use an R150F, then they both have to be top shift.

My R151F uses an R150F bellhousing to couple it to the 3.4L engine. Its all completely bolt on. If you want to use the R151F, find a 3.0L V6 bellhousing and clutch fork/throwout bearing assembly, and you will be golden.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to get a w56 since I have access to one. It is a top shift transfer on this one and I will bolt that up to the 22r. I have a triple shifter on the way as well that requires two top shifts. I also know that the 150, as you stated, requires 2 tops as well. I think that for the time being this will work out great and allow for the easiest upgrade when I do the motor swap in a couple years. The only thing that I should have to change, from my understanding, would be the input spline from a 21 to 23 (I think that's what is on the 150) that bolts to the 3.4.

You can't bolt the W56 to a 3.4L V6. You will have to use an R-series transmission when you do the 3.4L swap.

If you are talking about using the W56 t-cases, then yes you will have to convert to 23 spline to bolt to an R-series trans. If you bolt it to an R150F, you will also need an adapter. ONly the R151F can have a gear drive tcase bolted to it without an adapter.

Does your truck currently have a G52 or a W56? If your engine is carb it came with G52 which is forward shift and is a direct swap with a R151F. I did that in my truck. I also installed 23 spline 4.7 gears in my T-case so I could mate it to the R151F.

Yeah, it is a g52 (84 4runner, carbed). Would the w56 not be a straight across swap then? I kinda wanted to do something with two top shifts, so that I could utilize my duals with the 3.4 and so I can use the triple shifter found here:

I ordered up that item, but didn't quite realize that it will most likely only work on two top shifts because the forward shift will sit farther forward and would change the dimensions on the design.

I wanted to use the w56 b/c it would allow me to run two top shifts, that way I would be setup for an r150 with adapters besides the 23 spline. Eliminates having to buy and rebuild another transfer case later.

I guess, the only two question would be if a w56 will swap straight across or if it is possible to use two top shift transfers with a tranny setup for a forward shift transfer. Dang, I thought I had it all figured out. THanks for the help so far.
