swap20r to 22re

i picked up a 1980 toyota 4x4 about a year ago for a steal. well now i also picked up a '91 22re motor, 5 speed trans w/transfer case and the complete wiring loom, the dash, steering column and newer style steering gear box, wider rear end and some other parts as well. (whew...)

now i just have to figure out where to start. my plan is to swap the engine and trans first. has anyone done this......put a 22re into a truck that originally had a 20r motor in it? should i use the wiring loom that i got out of the newer truck (actually a 4runner)? is there a better way to getting everything to work correctly? ie: aftermarket wiring.

using the original wiring from the '91 and adapting to the '80 will be a tedious and time consuming job. if i do it that way. its a project so im not against a little extra effort to do it correctly.

any suggestions???

i converted my '84 4runner from carb to efi, your best bet is to leave the current harness in your '80 intact and strip everything that you don't need out of the '91 harness, i used a '86 harness but they should be very similar, i got mine stripped down to about 4 or 5 wires that i needed to tap into my '84 harness, the "engine" harness you wont need to touch, its the dash harness that you will need to separate the AFM, and some other wires from the mess

me and my friend put a 22re in his 84. We had a 22re out of a 884runner. we used the whole wire system out of the 88. we striped his wires out and then replaced it all with the 88s. we did the job in a week. it all works great.

superjoe,

thats what i planned on doing. i was going to start at the motor and work back. i figured that there were only a few wires(other than engine/control module) that i need to adapt. probably a hot lead and ground of some sort and starter wires. what wires did you adapt to the gauges/instrument panel?

If memory serves .. there are 7 wires .. you'll need 5 I think on yours because you'll not be wiring a speed sensor , or check engine light .

I used an earlier 84 EFI engine in this one ..

I liked the fact I could bolt on a double chain at low expence , and also it only uses the speed sensor on the automatics .. therefor I could hook up the "check engine" light and diagnostic plugs . 85 --> engines had the speed sensor in the speedo .

slacker when you said that only 5 wires were needed from the afm do you remember what was what so i can remove those 2 extra ones? also after i plugged in two connectors to a haness on the engine bay i think it goes into the ecm just have to plug it in probably tomorrow. would i need more than those im trying to remove as many wires as possible as i dont need any of the lights or gauges cause im using aftermarket gauges and stock lights harness from my 79. if you ca help that would be greatly appreciated.
