Mystery Vacuum Switch (pic.)

Hello all,
Ive been tracking down my weird idle/running rich problems and cannot figure out what this vacuum swutch goes to (has 2 wires going to it too, tho they go into a harness near the battery. Its not in my Haynes either. Its on an 83 4x4 22r long bed. Thanks for any help,
Alan

I'm not a 22r guy, but I would try bypassing that VSV to see if the problem gets better or worse, then troubleshoot elsewhere

do these help? sorry have nothing before 84. upper one is fed/canada emmisions and lower one should be cali. In both cases that vsv goes to/from manifold vacuum to the charcoal canister(s).

Hard to tell but in your photo it looks like the one port from the manifold vacuum is going directly into the front charcoal canister and then from that canister to the back canister. When it should be going from manifold to vsv then teeing off into both the canisters. But since the photo only shows half that side of the fender I cannot tell for sure.

Thanks for the fast replies! And thanks xxxtreme for the diagrams. That looks identical to my set up the ONLY difference I see is the valve an question is directly where the HAC valve in the diagram is (my truck wasnt equipped factory with that). I actually did plug it off PismoJoe and it hasnt made any difference. Worth a shot anyway. I just dont see anywhere the ''missing'' line could go, everythings hooked up... Its definitely a factory part too

And the idle problem Im having is intermittent (tho happens on a daily basis, I cannot purposely duplicate it to figure out its source ) Ill start the truck up cold it runs fine on fast idle, and once its warmed up it usually idles smooth. But sometimes when I start it again after its been warmed up I have to crank it a bit longer and once it starts it gets very lopey and acts like its going to sputter out tho it typically doesnt. And other times it will idle smooth after restart. There is no loss of power so Ive figured out its strictly an idle issue.

And xxxtreme Ill get the picture in the morning thanks again.

I do not think that is the canister vacuum VSV. I have a 1983 4x4 and my solenoid / VSV for the canisters looks different and is mounted on a bracket with the Vacuum switch (I still use it). If your truck has or had A/C then I would say that it is the Idle Up VSV. When the A/C unit calls for the A/C compressor to come on the VSV is activated and raises the idle up on the engine. I have a Federal emissions system not California so the VSV's could be different or someone could have used the Idle up VSV for a canister VSV operation at sometime. You must have all hoses on the VSV connected or the Vacuum port that feeds the VSV plugged / sealed otherwise the engine acts as if it had a vacuum leak. The problem could be that the engine is running fine then the VSV opens causing rough idle. When you mention about water temperature, the A/C VSV only operates (via the A/C amplifier control) when engine water temperature is up to normal. I hope this info helps you.

Well Ive ran for a bit now with it plugged off and its been fine. But I seem to be having other issues. When I start it up cold it will idle very rough and stumbly and running VERY rich( thick black smoke, leaves crap on the ground, this is while its on fast idle) Then once its warmed up Ill crank the key for about 3 seconds to start it and it idles rough also until you rev the throttle then it seems to smooth out. My mpg has gone from about 21 consistently to around 17 at best. Its very frustrating

The diagram that XXXExtreme22R provided is an excellent factory emission hookup description. I would use his diagram and check every hose shown for leaks, blockage, etc. For you to run that rich the choke could not be opening all the way, the choke unloader isn't working, the carb heater isn't working, the carb vacuum ports could be blocked, etc. I would start with the above then check the spark plugs and the ignition system, especially the vacuum advance system.
