L43 4 speed shifter issue
1980 pu 4x4. i have the L43 side shifting 4 speed. i just tightened up the shifter bolts on the tranny and tightened up the bolts on the shifter and now it shifts a lot better but i still have one issue. when i shift into 1st and 3rd gear my shifter handle will hit my SR5 amp and oil gauges' interior housing. it's the plastic housing that gets slightly hit. the housing has been worn in a groove due to this constant hitting when shifting into these 2 gears. also, i cannot shift into 2nd gear when im in 4LO because the tranny shifter handle will contact the transfercase shifter handle...ONLY IN 4LO.
my question for those who own the L43 tranny...can i rotate the shifter handle to angle it properly so it won't interfer with the plastic housing and transfercase shifter when in 4LO? are the shifters able to rotate on any of the other toy trannys? w56? g series? r?
please help

I'm fairly certain I have the same tranny in my '74 long bed with the 18R motor. I haven't had mine apart yet so I can't be sure but it did rotate on me one day. In fact it rotated itself right out of normal meshed gears while driving down the freeway-after coming to a stop and contemplating a tow charge-I spun the handle back clockwise 2 1/2 times and I had gears again.
You might be able to change the angle of the handle. I will look up the parts if we have the same tranny and see what I can find out.

the shifter ball socket bushing is a little worn...i really hope it's just that that's causing 1st and 3rd to hit the oil and amp gauge housing. i want to make sure if it's possible to rotate the shifter to clear the housing before i put an order for the ball socket bushing.
your tranny is a 4speed side shift right? yea, any info on this L43 would help me as google'ing it doesn't turn up too much...everyone just swaps it out for 5 speeds.
i will eventually swap mine out too but along with a 3rz in order to save myself from doing it twice. so trying to use the 4speed until that happens. currently i took off the sr5 gauges to stop them from getting more f'd up.

L 50/52 is the easiest since you don't have to move the crossmember or worry about new d/s in a first gen truck application but a W or G series will also bolt up, just the transmission is 4" longer...
basically yes, but there should also be a retainer screw/bolt at the bottom of the shifter
you might be able to see it in this pic

I believe my 4 speed is L47. Only has 33K miles on my Toyota Huntsman motor home. I can't shorten the shift pattern which is adjustable but frozen from sitting for so many years. If I could get the adjustment to move would it make that much difference? Thanks, Matt
