So I've searched and searched and how come there isn't a solid answer on this?! I don't know, so, now I'm resorting to asking a specific question.

I picked up a 1981 Pickup this year, always have wanted one. When the guy sold it to me, he told me that the alternator is a chevy alternator. Of course, the alternator crapped out on me.

Now I'm trying to figure out which one it is, and 5 hours later I'm ripping my hair out trying to find the same one so I can just swap it out, instead of buying new wiring harnesses, brackets, etc...

I've narrowed it down to either a 12si or CS130, but I have no idea how to find the exact one, because it has a connector that I can't seem to match up with anything.

So, I come to you, people of yotatech kingdom. Please, if you know what year, make, model, and engine this alternator came out of, enlighten me. Also, if you have any other suggestions, they are welcome.

I have a sales book for delco-remy alternators i'll look at it later and try and help you find witch alt it is unless someone jumps in who knows what one yours is.

With the post markings, it appears to be a
remanufactured stock 81 alternator, and not a Chevy. Mine has the same markings, and split mounts. The 12si and cs130 have a solid 2" mounts. Yours may be something like the top one on the list. http://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/cat...log_search.php

Lons, you are right. It is a nippondenso. I'm finally picking up this project again after a month of chaos.

So here's where I'm at now. I bought and installed a 105 amp alternator. Now I need to rewire it to the chevy alternator harness.

I have those 3 wires from the stock wiring (L-E-F)... Can anyone identify what those go to?

The new wiring harness is (S-F-L-P)

S goes to the post on back of alternator... From there a 6ga wire runs straight to battery +

Help me fill in the blanks. I'm kind of a dummy, but we don't need to talk about that.

I know this a little off topic, but I Highly recommend replacing the alt with a GM one wire and buying mounting bracket. SO much less hassles!

I would, but I'm stupid and I already bought and installed a 3 wire. I can't return the alternator anymore. Plus, this is a wheeling rig. I heard the 3 wire charges better at idle than the 1 wires.

Andrewd, for one, that is definitely a stock (or a replacement) Toyota alternator, not a GM alternator.

Also, there are two alternator setups for Toyota pickups (1) with 5 wires going to the external regulator and (2) with 6 wires going to the external regulator. The variations can be determined one of two ways:
(1) Find your external regulator (on the driver side fender wall near the power steering reservoir) and count the number of wires going to it.
(2) The green vs black plug on the alternator. I BELIEVE that the alternators with the green plug have a 6 wire regulator and the alternators with the black plug (like the one you have shown above) have a 5 wire regulator. I personally just bought a new alternator for my rebuild and I bought the one like yours above with the black plug and I confirmed that the voltage regulator is a 5 wire on my truck.

In addition, the Green vs Black plugs are different patterns - The wiring harness for a green plug alternator will not plug into a black plug alternator and vice versa. I BELIEVE that the difference in 5 or 6 wire also depends on whether or not the truck has AC, but I'm not sure of that.

I have the FSM for a 1983 Pickup that has better print quality if you need to see a close up. It should be similar to your 1981.

Here's what the 5 wire on my 83 routes to:

From the alternator
*White "B" to Regulator
*Green "F" to Regulator
*Black "E" to Regulator

From the Regulator:
*Yellow "L" to Charge Lamp
*Red "IG" to Engine 15amp fuse

Give me some colors in your harness and maybe I can help more.

I've been fiddling with these wires all day, and reading the repair manual w/ wiring diagrams.



Obviously on the BAT + terminal post on the alternator I have a 6ga wire running to the battery.

There are black, green, yellow, and white wires coming from the stock wiring harnesses.

Heres what I have running from the Chevy alternator.
P-Not used
L- Light - I have it running to the yellow wire
F- Ignition - I have it running to green... I'm not too sure this is correct
S - Sensor - I have this running to the BAT + terminal post on the alternator

This leaves the black wire and the white wire out, and possibly the green as well, assuming i ˟˟˟˟ that up.

Do I put the white wire on the BAT + terminal post on the alternator as well?

Andrew, you have a black plug alternator, not a green plug. By green/black plug, I mean the plug on your actual alternator, not the color of the plug on your wiring harness. All the plugs on your actual wiring harness are green. Sorry for the confusion there. Use that link that 83Toyota just posted. That's the same source of my 1983 FSM. The wiring diagrams are at the end.


Here's my take on what you have (assuming that the wiring is the same as an 83)

(1) The factory green wire is the F or Field wire - should go to your ignition. This wire is what tells the alternator to start charging. It should put out 12 volts with the ignition switch on and 0 volts with the ignition off.

(2) The factory yellow wire is the "L" or Lamp wire - it goes to your charge light

(3) The P is unused

(4) The S can be pigtailed into the 6ga wire to the +Battery

(5) Ground is obviously grounded

Simply put:
P-->Unused
L-->Yellow
F-->Green
S-->To battery or pigtail heavy gauge positive wire
GND-->Ground

The rest of the factory wires should be unused since they involve the operation of the voltage regulator.

I believe this should work - the part that is confusing you is the fact that there are extra wires in the harness inorder for the external regular to function. With the internal regulator of a GM Alternator you basically only need a light, ignition, pos and neg wires. Let me know how all this goes for you.
